Temples in Himachal Pradesh

Considered to be a heavenly abode of the God, Himachal Pradesh is known for its temples. With too many temples to even count them all, Himachal is truly called the 'Land of Gods'. Dotted with temples, the State has literally one every hamlet. Most of the temples have legends dating back to centuries, some as old as mankind itself.

And most amazingly, almost each of these temples has some kind of fair or festival connected to it, which is celebrated with a great fanfare by the locals to appease their deities.

Baijnath Temple Palampur :Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Baijnath Temple at Kangra is located 16 kms from Palampur in the Beas valley. Worshipped here as Vaidyanath or the Lord of Physician, Lord Shiva is believed to be present here since 1204 AD.

Chamunda Devi Temple :Overlooking the mighty Dhauldhar ranges, the Chamunda Devi Temple is situated on the bank of river Ban Ganga, at 1000m above sea-level. Located at about 15 kms from Dharamshala, this ancient temple is 700 years old.

Jakhu Temple Shimla :Deriving its name from Hindi word Yakhsa- mythological characters in Hindu mythology who are a link between human and gods; Jakhu / Jakhoo is a famous temple dedicated to the monkey god- Lord Hanuman. Situated at the highest peak in the hill capital of Himachal, at about 8500 feet in the east of historical ridge ground in Shimla, the temple is said to be existing from the times of Ramayana.

Jwalamukhi Temple Kangra :30 kms south of Kangra valley in the lap of Shivalik range and 56 kms from Dharamshala, the Jwalamukhi temple is dedicated to the "GODDESS OF LIGHT." One of its own kinds of temples, there is no idol in it. An eternally burning and shining blue flame emanating from a rock sanctum is only worshipped here as a manifestation of the goddess.
