History of Himachal


Himachal Pradesh & its history dates back to the Indus Valley Civilisation. This place has inhabited by tribes such as the Koilis, Halis, Dagis, Dhaugris, Dasa, Khasas, Kannars and Karats. The history of Himachal has also witnessed the invasion of Mahmud Ghazni in 1009 A.D. During that period he also looted wealth from the temples in the North India. This region was also ruled by Rajputs in 1043 A.D.

During the revolt of 1857, the people from Himachal did not participate much. They chose to stay away from the revolt. Some of the rulers even extended help to the British. Some important region of Himachal Pradesh such as Kangra, Siba, Nurpur, Chamba, Suket, Mandi and Bilaspur contributed their men and money for the First World War. But after 1914, situation began to change and the people from Himachal Pradesh came out to participate in the freedom movement of India.

In 1948, Himachal Pradesh was initially declared as a centrally administered territory with the combination of 31 hill states of Punjab province. Himachal Pradesh was declared a part C state on 26th January 1950 and a Union Territory on 1st November, 1956. By 1966, a few areas of Hoshiarpur and Gurdaspur districts and Shimla, Kangra, Kullu, Lahaul, Spiti, Nalagarh were also added to Himachal Pradesh. And finally in 1971, Himachal Pradesh was declared a state with 10 districts. In 1972, this state has added two more districts to its account.

Nowadays, Himachal Pradesh is the most attractive tourist destination in India. A number of tourists visit the place each year.
